What is an Exercise Physiologist?

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP’s) are university qualified, allied health professionals who specialise in the prescription of exercise for the management and prevention of chronic disease and injuries.

AEP’s have an in-depth understanding of how the human body works and this knowledge allows AEP’s to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities.

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist can provide evidence based exercise programs for the following conditions:

  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Respiratory conditions (COPD, asthma)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Neurological conditions (Stroke, Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, acquired/traumatic brain injuries)
  • Pre-hab and rehab (prior and post joint replacement or surgeries)
  • Musculoskeletal injuries (lower back pain, muscle strains, deconditioning)
  • Mental health conditions
  • Obesity
  • Chronic pain and fatigue

This is also extended to any other condition to which there is evidence that exercise can improve the clinical status of the disease.

Exercise & Sports Science Australia is the peak professional body and sole accrediting authority for Accredited Exercise Physiologists.
